From ArewaBooks to ArewaPen
We launched in 2021 as ArewaBooks, after Umar Muhammad saw authors selling the rest of their chapters in WhatsApp groups by dropping a bank account in the chat. Late 2025 we rebranded to ArewaPen so the platform could expand and scale — more stories, more languages, audio, and a bigger home for African writers and readers. Arewa Books Publishers is the original company. ArewaPen LTD is the second company, for the expanded ArewaPen brand.

Research in WhatsApp writing groups. An early working name, Hausa Bookstore, became ArewaBooks — a library so authors could publish and get paid without sharing bank details in chat.
