📖 Tears Behind Love — Chapter 5

By Bint

The next morning arrived with tension that neither of them could explain.
Ameera woke up earlier than usual. She didn’t sleep well again. Her thoughts had become too loud at night, especially the ones about Rayyan.
She kept asking herself one question:
Why does his silence affect me so much?
Downstairs, Rayyan was already in the dining room.
But this morning… something was different.
A woman was sitting across from him.
Well-dressed. Confident. Smiling like she belonged there.
Ameera paused at the stairs.
Her heart tightened slightly, though she didn’t understand why.
She slowly walked down.
Rayyan noticed her.
For a brief second, his eyes shifted—just a flicker of something unreadable.
Then he spoke normally.
“You’re awake.”
Ameera nodded.
“Yes.”
Her gaze moved to the woman.
Before she could ask, the woman stood up with a bright smile.
“So this is her?” she said, looking at Ameera.
Ameera felt uneasy.
Rayyan answered before she could.
“My wife.”
Simple words.
But they carried weight.
The woman smiled again, but this time it felt forced.
“I’m Salma,” she said. “Rayyan and I… we’ve known each other for years.”
Ameera’s fingers tightened slightly.
She didn’t show it on her face, but something inside her shifted.
Rayyan spoke calmly.
“She came for work discussion.”
Nothing more.
No explanation.
No emotion.
But Ameera noticed something else.
The way Salma looked at Rayyan… was not professional.
And the way Rayyan avoided her eyes… was not normal either.
After a few minutes, Salma left.
The house became quiet again.
But the silence now felt different.
Heavier.
Ameera stood near the table, unsure whether to sit.
Rayyan finally looked at her.
“You didn’t eat,” he said.
“I’m not hungry,” she replied softly.
He frowned slightly.
“Because of her?”
Ameera looked up quickly.
“No.”
But her voice betrayed her.
Rayyan leaned back slightly.
“You don’t need to worry about anyone,” he said.
Ameera gave a small, bitter smile.
“That’s easy to say.”
A pause.
Then she added quietly:
“I’m just your responsibility, right?”
The room went silent.
Rayyan’s expression changed slightly—but only for a moment.
Then he replied:
“Yes.”
One word.
Again.
Final.
But this time… it didn’t feel as strong as before.
Because even he hesitated for half a second before saying it.
Ameera nodded slowly.
“Okay.”
Then she turned and walked away.
But when she reached the stairs, her eyes finally filled with tears.
Not because of Salma.
Not because of Rayyan’s words.
But because she was starting to realize something dangerous:
She was beginning to care.
And in another part of the house, Rayyan sat alone… staring at the empty space where she had been standing.
For the first time…
His “yes” didn’t feel like the truth anymore.
