The first thing people noticed about Maryam was not her smile.

It was her veil.

In a world where everyone seemed to want to be seen, Maryam chose to remain a little mysterious. Her soft hijab framed her face, and her quiet nature made people curious. She was the girl who walked through the busy streets of Kano with a book in her hand and a heart full of dreams that she never spoke about.

To many, she was just another girl passing by.

But nobody knew the stories hidden behind her silence.

Nobody knew that every morning before leaving her room, Maryam stood in front of the mirror and reminded herself, “Allah knows my heart, even when people don’t.”

She wasn’t trying to be perfect. She was simply trying to be herself.

“Maryam! You’re going to be late again,” her younger sister, Hafsa, called from outside the room.

Maryam smiled as she quickly arranged her books into her bag.

“I’m coming,” she replied.

As she stepped outside, the morning air greeted her. The sound of people beginning their day filled the streets. Mothers called their children, shops opened, and the city slowly came alive.

Maryam loved ordinary moments like this.

But that day was different.

She didn’t know that a single meeting would change the way she saw her future.

She didn’t know that someone would look beyond the veil everyone noticed.

Someone would see her.

Not just the girl in the veil.

Not just the quiet girl with a book.

But Maryam.

The girl with dreams, fears, and a heart waiting to be understood.
