The Girl Who Wasn’t Supposed to Marry Him”

Part Two

Aisha stared at the letter for what felt like an eternity.

Her hands trembled.

She looked around her mother's room, afraid that someone might walk in and find her holding it.

Slowly, she unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was familiar.

It was his.

Sulaiman.

«“If you are reading this, it means I failed to tell you the truth.”»

Aisha swallowed hard and continued.

«“I didn't come to your father because I wanted to marry you.”»

Her heart stopped.

She read the sentence again.

And again.

Then she continued.

«“I came because of what happened seventeen years ago.”»

Aisha frowned.

Seventeen years?

She was only twenty-two.

What could have happened before she was even old enough to remember?

Suddenly, she heard footsteps approaching.

She quickly folded the letter and pushed it beneath her hijab.

“Who is there?” she asked nervously.

The door opened.

It was her mother.

Her mother looked at her.

Then at the Qur'an lying open on the bed.

Then back at Aisha.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Finally, her mother whispered,

“You found it.”

Aisha's eyes widened.

“You knew about this?”

Her mother sat down slowly.

“Aisha… there are things about your father that you don't know.”

“Then tell me.”

Her mother's eyes filled with tears.

Before she could answer, someone knocked loudly on the door.

Three knocks.

Her mother immediately stood up.

“Don't tell anyone you found that letter.”

“Why?”

Her mother looked toward the door.

“Because the person standing outside…”

She paused.

“…is the reason Sulaiman is marrying you.”

Aisha froze.

The knocking came again.

This time, harder.

KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

And then a man's voice came from outside.

“Aisha?”

She knew that voice.

It was Sulaiman.

But why was he here?

And why did her mother suddenly look terrified?

Aisha slowly reached for the letter beneath her hijab.

Then she noticed something she had missed earlier.

At the bottom of the letter was a single sentence:

«“Don't marry Aisha until she knows who her real father is.”»

Aisha's heart sank.

She looked at her mother.

“Who is my father?”

Her mother said nothing.

The door opened.

And Sulaiman walked in.
