The Hidden Passage

CHAPTER TWO — THE HIDDEN PASSAGE
The house was completely dark.
Nia stood frozen beside the wall, still holding the mysterious letter in her hand.
“You should never have come here.”
The words kept repeating in her mind.
A sudden sound came from the passage.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Nia swallowed hard.
“Is anyone there?”
No answer.
She turned on her phone flashlight and pointed it into the narrow passage. The beam revealed dusty walls, an old wooden floor, and several faded photographs hanging along the sides.
She stepped inside.
The air was cold.
After a few steps, she noticed something strange.
Every photograph showed the same house.
But the people in the pictures were unfamiliar.
Nia moved closer to one of them.
There was a young girl standing in front of the house.
The girl looked strangely familiar.
Nia raised her phone and took a picture of it.
Then she noticed a name written underneath.
“Amara.”
Suddenly, her phone buzzed.
Nia nearly dropped it.
A message had appeared on the screen.
UNKNOWN NUMBER:
DON’T TRUST ANYONE IN THE HOUSE.
Nia stared at the message.
Her heart began racing.
She typed:
WHO ARE YOU?
The reply came almost immediately.
“I’m the girl in the photograph.”
Nia's hands went cold.
She looked back at the picture.
The girl was no longer standing in the same position.
Nia stepped backward.
Then she heard footsteps coming from behind her.
Someone was walking toward the hidden passage.
“Nia?”
It was her mother's voice.
Nia quickly turned off her flashlight.
“Are you awake?” her mother called.
Nia looked at the mysterious photograph one last time.
Then she whispered,
“Amara…”
The footsteps stopped.
For a few seconds, there was complete silence.
Then her mother's voice came from the other side of the wall.
“Nia, whatever you do…”
Her mother paused.
“…don't open that door.”
