The Wife Behind His Lies

The Perfect Husband

by @everdream

The morning I discovered my husband was lying to me, he kissed my forehead and called me his queen.

I smiled.

I had no idea that the man holding me so tenderly was hiding a secret that would change my life forever.

My name is Amara, and for three years, I believed I was the luckiest woman alive.

Daniel was everything a woman could dream of. Handsome, wealthy, charming, and incredibly romantic. He owned a chain of luxury hotels, drove expensive cars, and lived in a mansion that looked like something from a magazine.

But none of that mattered as much as the way he made me feel.

At least, that was what I believed.

"Good morning, beautiful."

Daniel's deep voice pulled me from my thoughts. He stood beside our enormous bed, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. His expensive wristwatch glittered beneath the morning light.

I smiled at him.

"You're leaving already?"

He leaned down and kissed my forehead.

"I have an important meeting, sweetheart. I'll try to be back early."

I reached for his hand. "You promised we'd have dinner together tonight."

"And I intend to keep that promise."

He smiled, picked up his car keys, and walked towards the bedroom door.

Just before leaving, his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

Something changed in his expression.

It was brief, almost unnoticeable, but I saw it.

"Everything okay?" I asked.

"Work," he answered quickly.

He rejected the call and slipped the phone into his pocket.

I said nothing.

After all, I trusted my husband.

Or perhaps I had simply convinced myself that I did.

By noon, I was downstairs in the kitchen when Daniel's phone began ringing.

He had forgotten it.

I picked it up, intending to call him, but a message appeared on the screen.

The sender's name was saved as an unknown number.

The message read:

"How long are you going to keep pretending she doesn't exist? You cannot hide your wife forever."

My heart skipped.

Wife?

I read the message again, hoping I had misunderstood.

Daniel was married to me.

I was his wife.

So who was this person talking about?

Before I could think further, another message appeared.

"She deserves to know what happened three years ago."

My fingers began to tremble.

Three years ago.

The exact year Daniel and I got married.

I wanted to open the message, but the phone suddenly rang.

Daniel's name flashed across the screen.

I answered immediately.

"Amara?"

His voice sounded unusually tense.

"Yes, darling."

"Where is my phone?"

"You forgot it at home."

There was a brief silence.

"Did you touch it?"

I frowned.

"Of course. I was going to call you."

"Did you read anything?"

His question made my stomach tighten.

I stared at the message on the screen.

"No. Why?"

Another silence.

Then he spoke.

"Don't touch anything on that phone. I'll be home shortly."

The call ended.

I stood motionless in the kitchen.

For the first time since I married Daniel, I felt afraid of my own husband.

Thirty minutes later, the front door opened.

Daniel walked into the house with an expression I had never seen before.

He didn't greet me.

He didn't smile.

He simply held out his hand.

"Give me my phone."

I placed it in his palm.

His eyes searched my face.

"Amara, did you read those messages?"

I swallowed.

"Who is she, Daniel?"

His jaw tightened.

"Who?"

"The woman who sent you those messages."

He looked away.

"She's nobody."

"Then why is she saying you have another wife?"

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Daniel slowly turned towards me.

For a moment, I thought he would tell me the truth.

Instead, he stepped closer, cupped my face, and whispered:

"Baby, there are things about my past you don't understand."

I pulled away.

"Then explain them to me."

His phone vibrated again.

He looked down at the screen.

And this time, I saw something that made my blood run cold.

The message contained a photograph.

A wedding photograph.

Daniel was standing beside another woman, dressed in a black suit, with a wedding ring on his finger.

Underneath the picture were six words:

YOUR HUSBAND HAS BEEN MARRIED BEFORE.

I looked up at Daniel.

He said nothing.

And in that terrifying silence, I realized that the man I had loved for three years might be a complete stranger.
