The fan in Aisha’s small bedroom spun lazily, while pushing around the warm afternoon air. The Outside of the bustling city of Kano roared with the usual mix of motorbike horns, street vendors calling out prices, and children laughing in the distance.‎‎But inside, Aisha sat cross-legged on the floor, bent over her exercise book. She pressed her lips together, scribbling formulas into the margin, then flipping back to the chapter in her science textbook to double-check her answer.‎Her mother’s voice floated in from the kitchen.‎“Aisha, rest small, my daughter. You’ve been reading since morning.”‎‎Aisha smiled faintly. “Just one more page, Mama,” she called back, her pen still moving.‎Her parents were not wealthy — her father was a primary school teacher, and her mother sold akara and pap at the roadside in the mornings. They lived in a modest two-room apartment in a compound with peeling paint, where children’s laughter mixed with the smell of frying oil. But Aisha never saw their life as lacking. To her, their home was warm with love, and every book she owned felt like a treasure chest.‎‎Yet she knew not everyone believed in her the way her parents did. Some teachers, with pity in their eyes, doubted she could achieve much. The long bouts of illness that sometimes kept her home from school had made her an easy target for whispers.‎“She’s too sickly,” she once overheard. “How will she compete with the healthy ones?”‎‎Still, when she returned to class after weeks away, she would sit quietly at her desk, pick up her notes, and somehow rise to the top of the class rankings again. And every time, the jealous glances from a few classmates followed her like shadows.‎‎One Saturday afternoon, as she studied for the upcoming term exams, a loud knock came at the door. Her father answered, and moments later, a man in a neatly pressed shirt stepped into their living room. He was the vice principal from her school.‎‎“Aisha,” he said warmly, “you’ve been nominated to represent the school in the city-wide Science and Innovation Competition.”‎For a moment, the words didn’t register. She blinked at him. “Me?”‎“Yes,” he replied, smiling. “Your teachers believe you’re our best chance at winning.”‎‎Aisha’s heart pounded. She imagined a hall full of smart students from across the city, all competing. She also imagined the eyes of those who had doubted her ; watching, waiting to see if she’d fail.‎But deep down, under the fear, was something stronger. Determination.‎‎She straightened her back and said softly, but firmly, “I’ll do it.”
