THE SISTER SWAPBook One – Chapter One: The Name That Wasn’t HersThe house looked the same. That was the first thing Zainab noticed as the taxi slowed to a stop in front of the tall iron gate. Same cream walls, now slightly faded. Same neem tree by the corner, its branches stretching like it had been waiting for her. Even the crack on the right pillar—still there, stubborn, unchanged.Everything looked exactly as she left it.So why did her chest feel tight? She stepped out, adjusting her scarf, her eyes scanning the compound like someone searching for proof that she still belonged here.“Madam, your bag,” the driver said.Zainab nodded, forcing a small smile as she reached for it. Her fingers trembled slightly. She told herself it was just the journey. Long flights, no proper sleep. Anyone would feel like this.Still… something felt off.The gate creaked open before she could knock. Her mother stood there. For a second just one second Zainab’s face lit up.“Mama”But the word died halfway.Because her mother didn’t move.No rush forward. No arms wrapping around her. No tears of joy. Older. Thinner. But still carrying that same quiet authority. He looked at her… and paused. For a brief moment, something flickered in his eyes.Recognition.Then it disappeared.“Shigo ciki,” he said. Come inside. No name. No warmth.Just an instruction.Zainab stepped in slowly, her heart now beating louder than her thoughts. The living room hit her like a memory she couldn’t fully trust. The furniture was rearranged. The curtains were different. And the family portraits on the wall—She stopped. Her breath caught. Her eyes moved from one frame to another.Picture after picture.Aisha.Aisha smiling. Aisha sitting with their parents. Aisha on her graduation day.Zainab moved closer, her steps slow, almost cautious… like the floor might give way beneath her.Where was she?Her own photos… were gone.Every single one.Replaced.“Ka kawo kayan?” her father asked from behind.Zainab didn’t turn.“Baba…” she whispered, her eyes still locked on t...
