Sample · The Girl Who Said Hello First.
The exhibition was Zuhra's idea of a quiet afternoon. She had told her father she had a client meeting. She did not have a client meeting. She had needed two hours where nobody in her life could find her, and the Ngaoundéré Design and Architecture Exhibition had seemed like a good enough reason for a woman who did interior design for a living. The hall was not large, but it was full. Full of panels and prototypes, full of young architects and older ones, full of the smell of fresh paint and ambition. Zuhra moved through it slowly, her notebook tucked under her arm, her cream hijab pinned neatly at the shoulder. She was not looking for anything. She was simply breathing. She had been standing in front of a panel on sustainable building materials for four minutes when someone appeared beside her.Do you actually find this interesting," the voice said, or are you just standing here because it felt rude to walk past?Zuhra turned. The girl was about her age small, bright-eyed, wearing a deep burgundy abaya and the expression of someone who had stopped pretending a long time ago. She was looking at the panel with cheerful suspicion.I find it interesting, Zuhra said.Good. The girl crossed her arms. Tell me why. You don't know my name.I will in a minute. The girl held out her hand. Nadia.Zuhra.Zuhra. Nadia said the name slowly, like she was testing the weight of it. Apparently it was the right weight. "Come. There is a section on local material design at the back and I have been waiting for someone to look at it with me who actually knows things."Zuhra followed her.She did not know why. She was not, as a rule, a person who followed strangers through exhibition halls. But there was something about Nadia something open and easy, something that did not ask anything of her except her honest opinion on building materials that made the afternoon feel lighter than it had in a long time. They spent two hours walking the hall together. They argued about colour theory. They disagreed about whether glass buildings had any place in a city that reached forty degrees in April. Nadia was a fashion student but had opinions about everything, loud ones, and she shared them freely. Zuhra, who had spent years being careful with her own opinions, found herself simply saying what she ...
