Sample · The year I refused to Drift
Daniel woke up with sunlight on his face. Not the harsh kind that forces your eyes open, but the soft, patient kind that waits until you’re ready. For a moment, he didn’t move.He just lay there, staring at the ceiling, listening to the quiet hum of the fan and the distant sounds of morning traffic beginning to stretch awake.Something felt different. Not wrong.Just... lighter. He blinked slowly. The room looked familiar — too familiar. The faint crack in the upper corner of the wall. The old poster he had once meant to replace. The way the curtain leaned slightly to one side because the rod was uneven. It was his room.Exactly as he remembered it.But he felt like he had returned to it after being gone for years.Daniel sat up slowly. His chest tightened — not from fear, but from recognition. He didn’t know how to explain it. It wasn't like he had traveled through time. There were no dramatic flashes, no loud awakenings, no voices telling him he had been given a second chance. It was quieter than that.It felt like waking up from a very long dream. And remembering who you were supposed to be.He looked at his hands.Steady.Young.Unscarred.He flexed his fingers, almost testing them.“I’m here,” he whispered. The date on his phone read January 2025.Seventeen.He was seventeen again. But his mind didn’t feel seventeen. That was the part he couldn't explain. No sudden transformation.Just calm.He would observe. He would move carefully. He would enjoy being seventeen — but not recklessly. He stepped outside his room and inhaled deeply. The house smelled the same. Morning cooking. Warm air drifting in from outside.Everything was ordinary. And that was what made it powerful. He wasn't waking up to a different world. He was waking up to the same one — with a different mind.School started like it always did.Noise.Energy.Laughter bouncing off the walls.Daniel walked through the gate quietly, taking everything in.The way the security guard nodded without really looking. The way groups formed automatically — the same friends clustering ...
