Curiosity tugged Datti as he wondered about the relationship between them

by Hafsat Moh'd Arabi · The Fulani Bride 2 (Strange Is Love)

Early in the morning, the house bustled with activity as preparations were underway for Datti's long-awaited return. The kitchen became the heart of the household, filled with the aroma of spices and the sound of laughter. Haj. Aishatu, Wudi, and Nana were gathered in the kitchen, working together to create a feast fit for their beloved son and brother. Haj. Aishatu, with years of experience and culinary wisdom, took charge, guiding her daughters with a gentle hand.

As they chopped vegetables and stirred pots, the sisters couldn't help but engage in their usual banter and playful teasing. Wudi's, known for her quick wit and mischievous nature, couldn't resist poking fun at Nana's cooking skills. "Nana, be careful with that knife! We don't want any fingers in the soup," Wudi quipped, a mischievous sparkle in her eyes.

Nana, always the good natured one, rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her smile. "Oh, please! I'm a pro in the kitchen now, thanks to Momy Aishatu's guidance. You're just jealous of my culinary expertise," she retorted playfully.

Haj. Aishatu chuckled at her daughters' friendly banter, enjoying the lighthearted atmosphere that filled the kitchen. It brought her immense joy to see her daughters share such moments of camaraderie and laughter. She knew that in these moments, the bond between siblings grew stronger, forming a foundation of support and love.

"Enough teasing, you two," Haj. Aishatu chimed in, a loving smile on her face. "We have an important meal to prepare. Let's focus on making everything perfect for Datti's return."

The three continued their work, their hands moving with practiced ease. Wudi shared anecdotes and stories, filling the kitchen with laughter. Nana, eager to learn from her step mother's culinary prowess, soaked in every instruction with enthusiasm.

Boddo walked into the kitchen, dressed in her school uniform, her backpack slung over her shoulder. The room was filled with the enticing aromas of the food being prepared, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of hunger mixed with nervous anticipation for her upcoming exams.

Haj. Aishatu noticed her arrival and smiled warmly. "Good morning, my dear. Are you ready for your exams today?" she asked, her voice filled with motherly concern. Boddo nodded, her face lighting up with a mix of excitement and nervousness. "Yes, Momy. I've been studying so hard. I hope I do well," she replied, her voice filled with determination.

Nana and Wudi turned to face Boddo, their eyes filled with curiosity. Wudi, known for her straightforward nature, couldn't help but let her curiosity get the better of her. "Boddo, where are you going dressed like that? Don't you know that Datti is coming back home this morning?" she asked, a hint of rudeness creeping into her voice.

Boddo's smile wavered, and a sense of unease washed over her. She knew that her feelings for Kamal, her brother-in-law, were a secret she couldn't share with anyone. She took a deep breath, trying to maintain her composure. Haj. Aishatu, sensing the tension in the air, stepped in with a gentle but firm voice. "Wudi, remember that Boddo has her exams today. She needs to focus on her studies, and we should support her in every way we can," she reminded her daughter, her tone filled with authority.

Wudi's face flushed with realization, but she can't help but dislikes idea of her going to school, to her Boddo's been home to receive her husband is more important than that of her final exams. But in reality she looked at Boddo, her eyes softened with understanding. "I'm sorry, Boddo. I didn't mean to be rude. Your exams are important, and we should be supportive," she apologized, her voice genuine and contrite.

Boddo smiled appreciatively, grateful for the understanding and empathy shown by her mother and sisters. "Thank you, Wudi. I appreciate your understanding," she replied, her voice filled with gratitude. With the tension diffused, the atmosphere in the kitchen regained its warmth and harmony. Haj. Aishatu, Nana, and Wudi resumed their tasks, now more mindful of the importance of supporting one another during times of stress and responsibility.

As Boddo prepared to leave for school, after taking her breakfast, she felt a renewed sense of determination and support from her family. She knew that they stood behind her, cheering her on as she faced her exams. The love and understanding they shared gave her the strength to face any challenge that lay ahead.

And as she bid her family farewell, she carried with her their words of encouragement, knowing that their unwavering support would be her guiding light as walked towards the door, Boddo's heart raced as she was pulled into the corner, the panic rising within her. She struggled against the firm grip that held her, her mind racing to identify the person who had cornered her. Fear and confusion filled her eyes as she desperately tried to speak or scream, but her voice was muffled by the hand that covered her lips.

In the midst of her fear, Boddo's eyes met a pair of familiar eyes, filled with a mixture of worry and urgency. She recognized Kamal, his face etched with a deep concern. The realization that it was him who had pulled her into the corner brought forth a flurry of emotions, ranging from surprise to a glimmer of hope.

Kamal's grip loosened slightly, his voice a low whisper. "Boddo, it's me," he said, his words urgent yet filled with a tender undertone. "Please, listen to me. I need to talk to you."

Confusion and curiosity swirled within Boddo, momentarily overwhelming her fear. She nodded, her eyes locked with Kamal's, silently conveying her willingness to hear him out.

Slowly, Kamal released his hold on her, taking a step back to give her space. His eyes scanned her face, searching for any signs of distress or harm. "I'm sor...As Boddo heard approaching footsteps, she quickly pushed Kamal away, her voice catching in her throat as she struggled to form a coherent sentence. The fear of being caught in such a compromising situation overwhelmed her, and her instinct to protect their secret took over.

With a heavy heart, Kamal stepped back, his eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and understanding. He watched as Boddo hurriedly composed herself, her eyes filled with unshed tears. The footsteps grew closer, urging them to separate and pretend as though nothing had happened.

"I... I'm sorry, g...gram..py," Boddo managed to utter, her voice trembling with a mix of emotions. "I....ha...ve exams. I have to go."

Kamal's gaze never wavered from her face, his heart breaking at the pain and conflict he saw within her. He nodded slowly, swallowing the words that threatened to spill from his lips. "You're right, Boddo," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper. "Go, be safe."

Just as Boddo turned to leave, the footsteps reached the corner where they stood. She cast one last glance at Kamal, her eyes filled with unspoken longing, before she hurriedly walked away, leaving Kamal standing there, his heart heavy with the weight of their unrequited love.

As Boddo made her way to the waiting car, tears streamed down her face, mingling with a sense of regret and heartache. The conflicting emotions tore at her, leaving an ache deep within her soul. She wished things could have been different, that their love could have found a way, but the reality of their situation loomed over them, a barrier they could not cross.

The journey to school was filled with a heavy silence, broken only by Boddo's quiet sobs. Her driver, sensing her distress, offered a comforting presence, but words were inadequate in the face of her heartbreak.

Arriving at school, Boddo wiped away her tears and plastered on a smile, determined to face  her exams despite the storm of emotions raging within her. She stepped out of the car, her footsteps heavy, but her resolve unwavering.

As she walked through the school gates, Boddo knew that she had to bury her feelings, to focus on her exams and fulfill her responsibilities. The pain of her unrequited love would remain a secret, locked deep within her heart, as she navigated the complexities of her relationships and the expectations placed upon her.

But deep down, the ache of lost love lingered, a constant reminder of what could have been, and the heartache that had been left behind in that corner, where unspoken words and unfinished love were silenced by the arrival of footsteps.

As Kamal stood there, his heart heavy with the weight of unrequited love, Sofie walked into the corner with a confident smile on her face. She had always been known for her flirtatious nature, and she saw this encounter as an opportunity to capture Kamal's attention.

"Hi love, handsome," Sofie greeted, her voice dripping with playfulness. "What's got you looking so down? Maybe I can help put a smile back on that handsome face." Kamal's gaze shifted briefly towards Sofie, but his heart and mind were still consumed by thoughts of Boddo. He couldn't find it within himself to respond to Sofie's advances, as her presence only reminded him of the unrequited love he held for someone else.

Without uttering a word, Kamal turned and walked away, his steps heavy with the weight of his emotions. He didn't have the energy or desire to entertain Sofie's advances. His heart yearned for someone he couldn't have, and no amount of flirting or distraction could change that.

Sofie's smile quickly faded, replaced by a flash of anger and frustration. She couldn't understand why her charms and magical tricks, given to her by her native doctor, had failed to captivate Kamal's heart as intended. Her plans had been carefully laid out, with the hope that Kamal would fall under her spell after catching a whiff of her enchanted perfume.

Enraged by his indifference, Sofie's anger boiled over. She felt a surge of resentment toward Kamal, blaming him for defying the effects of her supposed magic. Her pride wounded, she vowed to find another way to win him over, no matter the cost.

Just then Sofie appeared. "You see, I told you this will happened. He's fake! Nothing about him is true, as you can see three years ago you took us to him, has anything changed or happene yet?." Sofie's anger simmered as Hadi confronted her about the native doctor she had sought guidance from. Hadi's words pierced through Sofie's frustration, causing doubt to creep into her mind. She had believed in the powers of the native doctor, hoping that the magic would give her control over Kamal's heart.

With a mix of defiance and curiosity, Sofie glared at Hadi, challenging her claims. "How do you know he's fake? Have you seen any changes in your own life or ours?" she retorted, her voice laced with skepticism.

Hadi sighed, her gaze filled with disappointment. "Sofie, It has been years now. I've seen you chasing after illusions and false promises. That native doctor may claim to have powers, but I've seen no real change in your life and mine or our mother's. It's time to face the truth." Sofie walked away, furiously. Thinking of how to get a new native doctor that will help her, get her work done.

Datti's arrival brought a wave of excitement and anticipation to the household. Haj. Aishatu greeted her son with open arms, a wide smile adorning her face. Ahijjo stood by her side, his expression a mix of relief and curiosity. Datti scanned the room, his eyes searching for Boddo, his supposed wife.

As he inquired about Boddo's whereabouts, he was informed that she was at school, writing her exams. A sense of relief washed over Datti, pleased that he wouldn't have to encounter the village girl just yet they had married him off to. He held a deep resentment towards her, unable to accept her as his wife.

Curiosity tugged at Datti's mind as he wondered about the relationship between Boddo and Kamal. He had heard whispers and wished to see it himself, enough to fuel his desire to find a reason to remove Boddo from his life, and so he can live with Minal and his son happily.
