Longing For Connection

by Hafsat Moh'd Arabi · The Man In My Dream

Noor sat alone in her office, the harsh fluorescent lights casting a sterile glow over the room. It was one of those rare moments when the relentless demands of her profession allowed her a brief respite. She leaned back in her chair, her gaze fixed on the stack of medical reports on her desk.

Despite her outward strength and dedication to her work, Noor couldn't escape the pervasive loneliness that gnawed at her from the inside. She had always been a fiercely independent woman, driven by her passion for being a physiotherapist and her desire to make a difference in the world. But that same passion had come at a cost a cost that manifested itself in her inability to maintain romantic relationships.

The truth was, Noor had yearned for love and connection, but her demanding career always seemed to take precedence. Time and again, she had attempted to strike a balance between her work and her personal life, but each endeavor ended in disappointment. Her relationships were like shooting stars intense, beautiful, and all too fleeting.

Noor's partners were drawn to her intelligence, beauty, and the aura of strength that surrounded her. They admired her dedication to her patients and her relentless pursuit of excellence in her field. However, they were also acutely aware that they would always come second to her work.

It wasn't that Noor didn't want love or companionship, it was just that she had become conditioned to prioritize her career above all else. Her days were filled with long hours at the hospital, emergency surgeries, and groundbreaking research. When she finally returned home, exhaustion clung to her like a heavy shroud, leaving little energy for anything else.

Her inability to give her full attention to a relationship often led to misunderstandings, missed dates, and partners feeling neglected. Each time, she watched helplessly as the connection crumbled, leaving her with a lingering sense of disappointment and loss.

Noor's longing for connection ran deep, and she had developed a coping mechanism to fill the void that echoed within her. On lonely nights, when her heart ached with a loneliness that seemed insurmountable, she turned to romantic movies.

The melodramatic narratives and whirlwind romances provided a temporary escape from her own reality. Noor would lose herself in the stories, the characters' passionate embraces and declarations of love providing a bittersweet solace. It was a way to experience the highs and lows of love vicariously, even if only for a fleeting moment.

Sometimes, when the weight of her isolation became too much to bear, Noor's thoughts would drift into a realm of fantasy. She would dream of being held, cherished, and loved unconditionally. These dreams were filled with passion and connection, emotions that she kept locked away in the depths of her heart.

Upon waking, the dream's warmth would dissipate, leaving her with a bittersweet ache that she could never quite shake. Noor's life had become a cycle of dedication to her work, fleeting romances, and dreams that held the promise of love and intimacy, if only for a brief moment.

She knew her mother, Haj. Basira, worried about her daughter's seemingly perpetual single status. The well-meaning woman often spoke of the importance of marriage and settling down, but Noor's heart remained guarded. She had seen the toll her father's dedication to his work had taken on their family, and she was determined to avoid a similar fate.

As Noor sat in her office, her loneliness felt like a heavy burden she couldn't escape. She longed for the connection she had pushed away for so long, but the fear of repeating the past and the demands of her profession held her back.

In her private moments, when the weight of her isolation became too much to bear, Noor turned to blue films. The melodramatic narratives and whirlwind romances provided a temporary escape from her own reality. This allowed her to experience the highs and lows of love vicariously, even if only for a short while.

Sometimes, as the loneliness gnawed at her, Noor's thoughts would drift into a realm of fantasy that was as intimate as it was fleeting. She would dream of being held, cherished, and loved unconditionally. These dreams were filled with passion and connection, emotions that she kept locked away in the depths of her heart. Upon waking, the dream's warmth would dissipate, leaving her with a bittersweet ache that she could never quite shake.

This habit of living vicariously through stories and dreams served as a temporary salve for her inner turmoil. Noor's mother had noticed the pattern, recognizing the yearning behind her daughter's actions. She understood the pain that lingered beneath Noor's strong exterior and wished desperately for her to find happiness and companionship.

But there was more to Noor's story than met the eye. The void in her life had been partly shaped by a tragic event that haunted her memories. When Noor was a mere child, her father had been taken from her in a way that felt brutally unfair. He had dedicated himself to his work, and in doing so, he had become the target of forces that led to his untimely demise.

Noor's father had been a doctor himself, a source of inspiration and guidance. His dedication to his patients had ultimately cost him his life, leaving a lasting wound in Noor's heart. The circumstances surrounding his death were shrouded in mystery, and the details were known only to a select few.

As a young girl, Noor had witnessed her mother's grief and the determination that arose from it. Her mother had worked tirelessly to raise Noor and her brother on her own, instilling in them a sense of purpose and a commitment to justice.

Noor had made a solemn vow to herself, she would avenge her father's death by following in his footsteps. She would become a successful doctor, one who would make a lasting impact on the medical field. Every success she achieved was a step closer to fulfilling that promise.

In her pursuit of excellence, Noor found solace, purpose, and a way to keep her father's memory alive. But along the way, she had unknowingly created barriers between herself and the world around her, isolating herself emotionally to protect her heart from further pain.

As Noor parked her car at the hospital and stepped out, her resolute expression remained unchanged. She was a woman driven by her dedication to her profession, but beneath that determination lay a longing for connection that h

ad remained unfulfilled for far too long.
